Nail groove reconstruction combined with correction of the nail curl deformity in 48 cases with severe ingrown toenail

Abstract: Objective: To assess the efficacy of nail groove reconstruction combined with correction of the nail curl deformity on ingrown paronychia. Methods: 48 patients with severe ingrown paronychia in our department from December 2019 to October 2021 were treated with nail groove reconstruction and combined with correction of the nail curl deformity. The key techniques of the operation included wedge-shaped excision of proliferative granulation tissue to reduce nail fold, then the side tissue of nail fold and nail bed were made at the same level through our suture method; two small rectangular rubber sheets are respectively fixed under the both edges of the nail to passivate the nail edge; two rubber bands was used to pull the two rubber sheets under the nail margin to raise the bilateral margins of the nail for correction the nail curl deformity. Results: All 48 patients (81 big toes) were cured and there was no recurrence after 6 months of follow-up.  Conclusion: The efficacy of nail groove reconstruction combined with nail curl for ingrown paronychia is good.
