Abstract:

Objective:To determine the correlation between the serum methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) activity and clinical features of the patients with vitiligo.  Methods: The MTHFR activity was detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 90 patients with vitiligo and 90 controls with matched age and sex. Results: The mean level of MTHFR was 332.77±92.85 U/L in vitiligo, which was lower than that in controls (403.66±96.56 U/L), (P<0.0001). The level of MTHFR activity in stable vitiligo, progressive vitiligo and rapid progressive vitiligo was decreased in a descending manner. There was no significant difference of MTHFR activity in sex, family history and duration of the disease. Conclusion: Reduction of MTHFR activity may be associated with the development of vitiligo
