Abstract: Objective: To assess the efficacy of botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). Method: The patients with PHN were divided into the observation groupand the control group randomly. The patients in the observation group were treated with subcutaneous injection of saline 4mL containing 100 units botulinum toxin type A. Those in the control group were treated with triamcinolone injection and lidocaine injection with ratio 1:1, 4mL. Severity of pain symptoms (VAS) before and after treatment was assessed. Result:Sixty five cases were collected, including 27 in the observation group and 38 in the control group. After treatment for 8 weeks, the VAS in the observation group and the control group was 2.72±1.37and 4.53±2.2, with a significant difference (P<0.05). The effective rate in the observation group and control group was 96.2% and 76.3% with a significant difference (P<0.05). Conclusion:Botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of PHN is more effective than triamcinolone.
