Analysis of the death in cured leprosy patients in Wuxi City from 2014 to 2023

Abstract: Objective: To analyze the death situation of cured leprosy patients in Wuxi City from 2014 to 2023. Methods: The data of death among cured leprosy patients were analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis. Results: A total of 493 cured leprosy patients (366 males and 127 females) died in Wuxi City from 2014 to 2023, and 491 of them died outside the leprosy village hospitals. The average age at death was (76.02 ± 9.98) years old, ranging from 39 to 102 years old. The largest number of deaths occurred in the 70-89 age group (68.4%), followed by the 50-69 age group (22.9%), and the least in the 30-49 age group (1.2%). There were 180 cases (36.5%) of grade 2 deformities and 13 cases (2.6%) of grade 1 deformities, with an average age at death of (77.24 ± 8.40) and (76.46 ± 13.12) years old respectively. There was no statistically significant difference in the average age at death among the non - deformity group, the grade 1 deformity group and the grade 2 deformity group (F=1.99, P=0.137). The main causes of death are age-related organ failure (92 cases, 18.7%), cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (70 cases, 14.2%), and malignant tumors (66 cases, 13.4%). Conclusion: From 2014-2023, the death rate among leprosy cured patients the number of deaths aged 70-89 is the highest in Wuxi, and organ failure related to old age, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases and malignant tumors are the main causes of death.
