Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of the Ultra-pulse CO2 laser combined with topical butenafine therapy in the treatment of the patients with onychomycosis. Methods: The diseased nails were randomly selected and divided into the treatment group and control group in the same patient. The diseased nails in the treatment group were treated with ultra pulse CO2 laser (once a week initially and once four weeks after 4 times) combined with butenafine ointment twice a day, for 12~16 weeks on fingernails?and 20~24 weeks on toenails. The nails in the control group were treated with butenafine cream only. Results: Nineteen patients including 131 nails (66 in the treatment group and 65 in the control group) were enrolled into the study. The effective rates were 51.52% and 18.46% in the treatment group and in the control group, with a significant difference (P<0.01). The negativity rates of fungal microscopy was 66.67% and 26.15% in the treatment group and in the control group respectively, with a significant difference (P<0.01). Conclusion: Domestic super pulsed CO2 laser combined with butinafine ointment in the treatment of the onychomycosis nails is more effective than butinaphone ointment alone.
