Investigation of chronic diseases in 26 cured leprosy patients

Abstract: Objective: To investigation the common chronic diseases among cured leprosy patients, and to assess their main health issues and risk factors. Methods: Routine physical examination was performed on 26 cured leprosy patients living permanently in a sanatorium by professional prevention and control personnel. Medical diagnoses were made by physicians specializing in internal medicine and dermatology. The prevalence and distribution characteristics of chronic diseases were analyzed statistically. Results: The overall prevalence of chronic diseases among the 26 cured leprosy patients was 84%. Cardiovascular diseases were the most common, accounting for 50%, following by digestive system diseases (23.08%), tumors (19.23%), and endocrine system diseases (15.38%). The highest prevalence was found in the age group of 60-69 years (34.6%). The proportion of males with two or more chronic diseases was higher than that of females. Conclusions: The prevalence of chronic diseases among cured leprosy patients is high. It is necessary to strengthen regular physical examinations for these patients in order to detect and treat diseases early.
