Abstract: Objective: To determine the impact of depression and anxiety on the immunological status and recurrence in the patients with condyloma acuminatum (CA). Methods: The emotional state of 100 CA patients was evaluated with Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). If SDS>50 and/or SAS>50, the patient was judged as having depression and anxiety, otherwise, as having no depression and anxiety. The level of peripheral blood regulatory T cells were assayed by flow cytometry. Results: The level of peripheral blood regulatory T cells was significantly higher in CA patients (8.64±2.12)% than in the normal control group (5.28±1.21)%. The level of peripheral blood regulatory T cells among the patients with depression and anxiety (8.64±2.12)% was significantly higher than that among the patients without depression and anxiety (7.55±2.05)%. The recurrence rate of CA after treatment was higher in the patients with depression and anxiety than in the patients without depression and anxiety at month 1, 2, 3 and 6. Conclusion: Depression and anxiety may increase inhibition of cellular immune function in CA patients, resulting in higher likelihood for CA relapse.
