Analysis of disability among the newly diagnosed leprosy patients in Yunnan Province from 1990 to 2018

Abstract: Objective: To analyze the disability of newly diagnosed leprosy patients in Yunnan Province from 1990 to 2018. Methods:The data of 11010 newly diagnosed leprosy patients was analyzed. Results:Of 11010 cases, 2647  (24.04%) had grade-2 disability.  Of 4006 paucibacillary leprosy (PB) patients, 1294 had grade-2 disability (32.3%).  Of 7004 multibacillary leprosy (MB) patients, 1353 had grade-2 disability (19.3%). Out of 2202 disabled cases, which were further analyzed, 138 had disability of one eye and 184 had disability of both eyes, 742 had disability of one hand and 430 had disability of both hands, and 384 had disability of one foot and 144 had disability of both feet. Conclusion: The disability rates is higher in PB than in MB. The disability rates of hands is significantly higher than that of eyes and feet. The disabilities in hand and feet are asymmetrical in most cases.
