Abstract: Objective: To assess the efficacy and safety of 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) in the treatment of basal cell carcinoma. Methods: The data of 17 patients with basal cell carcinoma(BCC)(including 14 cases of superficial BCC and 3 cases of nodular BCC) treated by ALA-PDT were analyzed retrospectively. Results: Of 14 patients with superficial BCC, the lesions in 13 cases were in complete remission with slight pigmentation or hypopigmentation left. Two of them recurred at month 6 and month 10 after treatment respectively. The size of the lesions in 3 patients with nodular BCC reduced by 50%. There was no obvious adverse reaction in all patients. Conclusion: ALA-PDT has good clinical effect and low recurrence rate for the treatment of superficial BCC. However, it has low efficacy for the treatment of nodular BCC.
