Epidemic analysis of syphilis in Qingdao city from 2010 to 2017

Abstract: Objective: To determine the characteristics of syphilis epidemic in Qingdao in order to provide evidence for  intervention. Methods: The clinical and serological data of syphilis cases was analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis. Results: A total of 16769 syphilis cases were reported from 2010 to 2017 in Qingdao. The reported incidences ranged from 18.32 to 30.01 per 100,000 population , with a yearly increase of 3.18%. 72.64% patients aged from 20 to 49 years old, and the proportion of elder patients aged above 60 years increased from 6.11% in 2010 to 25.78% in 2017. Predominantly, 26.97% patients were houseworkers or unemployed. and the proportion of farmers was 18.87% . The average prevalence of syphilis among female sex workers, men who have sex with men and drug abusers was 9.65%,6.85% and 9.25%, respectively. The average annual incidence of Shibei District is the highest (47.58/100000), followed by Licang District (33.08/100000) and Shinan District (32.05/100000). Conclusion: The prevalence of syphilis is incresing in recent years in Qingdao, and the increase in the elderly is more significant.
