Clinical and pathological analysis of epidermal cyst in 1007 cases

Abstract: Objective: To analyze the clinical and pathological characteristics of epidermal cyst. Methods: Collect and analyze the clinical and pathological data of 1007 patients who were diagnosed as epidermal cyst in Wuxi people's hospital from January 2008 to May 2018. Results: There were 680 male and 327 female in 1007 cases. The average age of 1007 patients was 37.5±17.9 years old and most patients occurred from 21 to 50 years old age. There were 680 male and 327 female. The lesions located on head, face and neck in 710 patients, on trunk in 179, limbs in 96 and the lesions fractured in 97 patients (13.7%), 23(12.8%), 9 (9.4%), respectively. Biopsy showed chronic inflammatory changes in 101 cases, granulomatous inflammation in 89 cases, calcification in 8 cases, pigmented naevus in 3 cases. The diagnosis of  epidermal cyst was made in 456 patients and the misdiagnosis of sebaceous cyst in 320 patients was made in clinic primary diagnosis. Conclusion: Epidermal cysts usually occurs in youth to middle aged male. Head, face and trunk was the predilection sites. Misdiagnosis rate of epidermal cysts was 54.7% and the most misdiagnosis is sebaceous cysts.
